Field demonstration cum seed distribution on ‘Improved cultivation practices of Rabi season vegetables’

A field demonstration was conducted on “Improved cultivation practices of Rabi season vegetables’ under the project Farmers’ FIRST, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam in four locations, viz., Lalumpam on the 27th October, 2020 and Sarikushi, Umtham and Mawtnum on 11th November, 2020. A total of 97 growers from different villages including Sarikushi (17 nos.), Lalumpam (17 nos.), Nalapara (12), Umtham (10 nos.), Borkhatsari (11 nos.), Mawtnum (12 nos.), Mawphrew (07 nos.), Borgang (05 nos.), Purangang (04), Nongagan (01 no.) and Joigang (01 no.) were participated in the program. A technical knowhow was provided to the growers on various aspects of nursery raising and scientific cultivation of cole crops and other rabi season vegetable crops. The farmers were exposed to both theory and hands on demonstration of various activities such as seed bed preparation, seed sowing, transplanting, cultural practices, plant protection and harvesting of cole crops. Discussion and interaction with participants were also held simultaneously which revealed that demonstration and training on scientific cultivation in the previous years had enhanced their technicality, profitability and livelihood. Seed materials of cole crops [broccoli (500 g), cabbage (250 g), cauliflower (200 g) and Lettuce (200 g)], carrot (3500 g), capsicum (200 g), tomato (300 g), cucumber (50 g), coriander (3,000 g), pea (10,000 g) and onion (3,500 g) were distributed to the growers. The programme was coordinated by Dr. H. Rymbai (Scientist - Horticulture), Dr. M. Das (Sr. Scientist & PI, Farmers’ FIRST Project), Dr. V.K. Verma (Sr. Scientist), A. Barman (SRF) and L. Khongrymmai (Field Assistant), ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam.
